Painting Surface

We will alternate between working on white (untinted) surfaces and neutral gray toned surfaces throughout the month.
It’s helpful to have a few of each prepared so you can easily work along with whichever approach we’re using in class.

Surface Options:

  • Masonite (hardboard) panels

  • Canvas panels

  • Linen panels

  • Stretched canvas or linen

Size:
Medici may recommend a specific size for certain sessions.

Common sizes used:

  • 8” × 10”

  • 9” × 11”

  • 11” × 14”

  • 12” × 16”

Quantity:
Have 1–2 surfaces ready for each class.
Ideally, keep both white and gray toned surfaces on hand.

Pre-Gessoed

Toning / Preparing Your Own Surfaces (Optional)

If you’d like to prepare your own panels or adjust commercial surfaces:

Mix a neutral gray halftone and apply with a fine nap roller or a smooth brush.
